MCC Competencies

Mesa Community College’s Dental Hygiene Program focuses not only on training and developing competent hygienists, but well-rounded professionals as well. This includes synthesizing information and thinking critically, making ethical decisions, working as a team to complete projects, and developing a professional identity.

An example of how I have taken information and thought critically is a research paper I worked on with another student about the use of lasers in periodontal therapy. Here is a link to the paper: LAPT Research Paper.

I also researched and presented about how to treat a medically compromised patient, specifically a pregnant patient. Here is a link to the paper: Medically Compromised Paper

To develop as a professional and to see ethical decisions being made, I attended a BODEX meeting. Here is a link to a paper about my experience: BODEX Meeting Paper

Another focus of our dental hygiene program is developing emotional intelligence. I believe that emotional intelligence helps me to better take care of my patients, take care of myself, and function in a team. Here is a link to a paper I wrote about my continued journey toward emotional intelligence: My Emotional Intelligence
